Survivalism: 5 Qualities You Need to Survive

No matter what your friends tell you, your obsession with Bear Grylls isn’t actually going to help you in a survival situation. We compiled 5 things you’ll need to make sure you’re ready for any survival situation. We also made it into an acronym— MERDE. Ironically, merde is French for ‘shit.’ So, to make sure you don’t end up deep in it, just remember MERDE:

1. Mental Strength

When you find yourself in a survival situation, staying calm and thinking clearly are key. For this you’ll want to stay on top of your mental strength. That means making sure you’re mentally sharp and mentally sound. Read up on the Psychology of Survival for some quick and easy tips on how to keep your mind on the prize—surviving.

2. Exercise

Working out isn’t just about looking good. When you’re in a survival situation, being in pique physical shape could make the difference between life and death. Hate the gym? 3. Reproduction

A not-so-common thing to consider for survivalism is reproduction. Maintaining positive relationships can be very advantageous when it comes to surviving, so it’s best to have an intimate knowledge of your personal reproductive cycle in case you decide to cozy up with your survival partner. A Girl’s Prep Guide suggests Fertility Awareness may be an effective practice for survivalists.

4. Diet

Processed foods fill our grocery store aisles today. Unfortunately, Doritos don’t grow on trees, and Gatorade doesn’t flow from the Earth. Do yourself a favor: start eating more natural foods (you know, like from the produce section) and drinking water. Be sure to familiarize yourself with edible plants too. Your body will thank you.

5. Expertise

Maybe you need to research and brush up on building shelter or locating water or lighting a fire or treating a wound or signaling for help. Obviously survivalism is a complex art, so be sure to keep up with best practices and new innovations. Being a master of survival techniques could just save your life.
